Large-Scale Vehicular Stealing

Now here’s a game you can set your watch to! Created for TIGS Bootleg Demakes Competition in August, I teamed up with the much better programmer than I Nickenstien(of CGEmpire).

LSVS is a demake of GTA 4, sticking quite closely to the limits of the NES with some artificial limits(no smooth scrolling), and some removed(colour limits mostly). You drive around a 2D map similar to that of GTA 1 & 2 but to really set this apart form those 2 we decided to put in side-on mini-games for many of the actions. When you steal a car, sometimes you go into a mini-game where you have to have a scrap with the driver in order to get the car. Mugging someone sees you do essentially the same thing, but this time with the reward of money. There’s even a half implemented prostitution solicitation mini-game, which is far too easy as you just stand in front of a hooker holding a button until you score.

Sounds were mostly stock, but slightly degraded to make them sound a little shit. We had intended to have an announcers voice to go with the messages appearing on screen but neither of us have the voices.

What would a GTA game be without a story? With this in mind Dan Marshall wrote out mission dialogue along with a rough story that was presented badly throughout the game. The breakdown is that your girlfriend was kidnapped(the game was fake made in the 80s when that was all the rage) and you went to America to get her back. You do missions for a crooked cop who eventually tells you the whereabouts of your girl and the kidnapper. You face him, or her(it used the mugging game since we didn’t have time to create a seperate one) despite it clearly being a man in the story screens. Then the game ended.

GTA games have cops that chase you, ours didn’t since we didn’t have the time to do that. You got wanted stars but they meant absolutely nothing. We had intended on having a helicopter follow you around, and if it caught you a mini-game started with cops rappelling down and you taking them on in a gun fight. It would have been great, but alas time was not on our side and it was cut.
